SCALLA 2004 working conference
Crossing the Digital Divide
shaping technologies to meet human needs
Kathmandu, Nepal, 5th to 7th January 2004
Why Nepal?
We have chosen Kathmandu in Nepal for this final working conference to enable people from across the SAARC
region to participate freely. Nepal is linguistically and culturally a rich country that has relatively recently liberalised its language policies as part of the
process of moving to a parliamentary democracy. The languages of Nepal have been studied for many years, with a strong western influence in this study,
though there is a strong scholarly tradition in Nepal closely linked to India. There has been an active interest in software localisation within Nepal.
Conference Hotel
The conference will be held in the luxury and well established Soaltee Crown Plaza Hotel
in the south east of the Kathmandu.
Nepal's attractions
Nepal itself is an attractive location for this conference, famous for its Himalayan scenery and its hospitable people.
